The other day I was in a well known supermarket in Southgate, and they were selling compilations by Ministry of Sound. One of the albums stood out, and I grabbed it and bought it. It was something unusual for me, seeing as I’m always into Rave music: it was a compilation focussed on Hip Hop music. Many of my friends don’t know I grew up listening to Hip Hop and Rap, and I can not point out a moment when I decided to listen to those styles. My parents weren’t fans, nor my friends. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Hardcore House artists used Hip Hop and Rap bits and bobs in their tracks? I simply don’t know, but during the 90s I bought these albums, and even my father bought albums in the States (when he was working there) and gave them to me.

I just wanted to hear those classic anthems, so the album I bought contained a lot of well known records. Seeing as I’m always craving for more, Soundcloud (who’s my friend) made sure I would find nice mixes to listen to. The first one that popped on my timeline was a mix by Billy Booyaaa, who made this mix back in 2010. It contains records mostly forgotten by well known artists, from the Notorious BIG to Outkast to Busta Rhymes to Snoop Dogg to Nas. The tracklist blew me away, and also the amount of plays (858k) impressed me. I pressed play, and I went back to the 90s immediately.

Let me show you the tracklist, if you haven’t heard this mix yet.

tracklist TCD

01. Notorious BIG – Kick In The Door
02. OutKast – Aquemini
03. The Roots – What Goes On
04. Junior MAFIA – Get Money
05. Mobb Deep – Hell On Earth
06. OutKast – Mainstream
07. Royce Da ‘5″9 – Boom
08. Nas – Nas Is Like
09. A Tribe Called Quest – God Lives Through
10. D-12 – This Is How
11. 2Pac – Do For Love
12. Notorious BIG – Juicy
13. N.O.R.E – Nothin’
14. Busta Rhymes – Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See
15. Snoop Dogg feat Nate Dogg – Ain’t No Fun
16. The Roots – Work
17. OutKast feat Cee Lo Green & Erykah Badu – Liberation

This is a serious line-up of records. Sick records. Even the most whittest person on God’s given Earth (me) thinks this is really a dope tracklist. And for once not the mainstream records, no top 40 shit. Pure raw stuff.

I like to hear records that aren’t played on air that often, but had an impact on the scene. Yes, we all know OutKast’s ‘Hey Mama’, Busta Rhymes ‘Gimme Some More’, Snoop Dogg’s ‘What’s My Name’, and the list goes on. This mix, by Booyaaa, contains the records which are really underground. Yeah, they are known, but they are sometimes even better than the big mainstream records.

The mix has got a mellow background. This mix ain’t too rough, more mellowed out. Hip Hop and Rap doesn’t mean it’s coming at you through your speakers, molesting your braincells. It can be civilized, respectful, grown up.Even though the lyrics/message is raw, the music can still touch you.

Billy picked so many great anthems, and yeah, he has picked 2Pac’s record which appeared in the Top 40, but we forgive him. This is still an anthem for a generation, and it’s my favourite in this mix. He joins the stage with Notorious BIG, I love his raw voice. His records (both of them) are simply dope.

A nice and very calm mix. You don’t want to miss out on this one. Would I much prefer this mix, or the CD compilation I bought the other day? Mixes like this one all day!

Ps. what happened to Hip Hop/Rap? 90s music is simply a thousand times better. Nowadays the quality has left the building, and nonsense has taken over. During the 90s music was all about the strength behind the messages, now it’s simply made to sell. Shame.

We Europeans are good in many things. But especially two countries, in which many styles have originated, like Hardcore/Gabber, and Jumpstyle. We’ve seen the rise and fall, and with Hardcore the fall meant that it would climb back up again and become bigger than before. Not Jumpstyle, not at all. This sadly faded away after a dreadful period in time for the style. It grew and grew and it became so succesful, it blew itself up by its commercial success, and the media ridiculing it. It was a shamble, the whole thing.

We’ve seen it grow, and all of a sudden it became cool. Too cool. You saw idiots on TV giving Jumpstyle lessons, and idiots basically ridiculing it. Every channel had a show dedicated to it, and like TMF did to Hardcore, it died out. Kids who did not understand the concept of music started liking it, and it did hurt me a lot when it faded away, because I liked Jumpstyle a lot! It became my favourite style for a while, and I wasn’t one of those people actually bothered about jumping, I liked it because the music was good.

Over the years it has made a small comeback, and now it has joined forces with Hardstyle to emerge as Freestyle. But the sound that dominated the early 00s will never appear. Unless you find a mix made by someone who knows a thing or two about Jumpstyle: Pat B.

He kindly added a tracklist, and it made me smile from ear to ear, because I know each artist and each track! Taking me back to my 20s, when music mattered. When music moved me, not like it did when I was a teenager. You start to develop a extra sense, knowing what good music and bad music is. And Jumpstyle, it had its flaws, had also good music. You will see a few good tracks in this tracklist!

tracklist

Crikey, these tunes are so amazing, these take me right back! F**k the present day music, I’m back in my time machine (made by Professor Barabas) and jumping back into time. Sweet Lord, how I miss this.

Yes, the music was good, and the tunes that Pat B has selected are good. Even the cheesy tunes by Jekyll and Hyde (thank God he didn’t put in DJ Porny, what an embarassement). You can still feel the vibes it generated all over the world!

The tunes are good, so many tunes are just genius! Sadly they aren’t played as often as they should, because they deserve a stage. It’s mainly Freestyle nowadays, in sets they do sometimes play Jumpstyle, but mainly updated Jumpstyle tunes. I wish this kind of Jumpstyle came back, because it was so excellent. And yes, this word isn’t pleasant, but f**k me, this music is eargasmic.

Yes, I was a dork. I liked Jumpstyle, so what?

Pat B’s mix is really tight, and cool. I know I recently reviewed one of his other mixes, but I couldn’t let this slip by. This is just too good, and 10k+ listeners agreed so far. Epic mix, Pat B, epic!

Can’t pick a favourite, it’s too damn hard. It’s like picking your favourite character from Suske & Wiske, you can’t. Even though we all don’t like Sidonia, we still love her (yes, I just said something extremely Belgian, but hey, who cares?)

On dreary days such as today you just want music which hypes you up so much, you’ve got enough energy to get you through the last hours of the weekend. And I think I have found a mix you really want to hear, if you are a fan of Freestyle. This mix is made by DJ Potato, and it’s a fanmix. Technically it’s the second instalment of the fanmix, so if you are digging this, you could browse online and find more mixes by him.

Never heard of DJ Potato before. Never expected someone who would name himself after a potato. Maybe this DJ is so obsessed with potatoes, he named himself after it? Never heard of him before, but then again I’m new to the Freestyle scene, so I still need to learn more and more every day. But in all fairness, those Freestyle mixes are emerging on Soundcloud every day, so I get to know the scene and the artists a bit more every day.

Not only is this just a mix showcasing the DJs skills, but also his own skills as a producer: this mix is packed with DJ Potatoes own records. It’s time for us to check it out, eh? A nice tracklist was added, and it’s full of potatoes….

A lot of potatoes. And also collaborations with well known names such as Luna, Pat B and Dr. Phunk. If you make records with these legends, your status is everymore changing. Not a bedroom DJ/producer anymore, a potential groundbreaking artist you become.

I’m digging Freestyle more and more each day, and when I pressed play to hear and feel this mix, I was in for a shock: this made my whole body more. Well, bounce on my chair, that’s more like what I did. Digging Potatoes approach to the Freestyle scene.

This mix was carefully mixed, and the tracks are all ace! I’m new to the Potato world, but he’s gained a new fan. To celebrate me becoming a fan, I will serve a dish tonight, containing potatoes.

When you make my girlfriend sing along one song, and she really doesn’t like anything EDM related, you’ve done something I’ve been trying to do for quite a while, and haven’t succeeded. Thanks Potato.

A very dope mix, very entertaining. The mix is tight, the tracks are all good. Got nothing bad to say about this fanmix. Worth checking out right now, and improve your dull Sunday!

On the 11th of March you are probably in Eindhoven, aren’t you? You must be, seeing as you are a Freestyle lover. You are not? What are you doing here? Anyway, you are probably getting excited for this event, seeing as the line-up is immense, and this ‘new’ style is the hottest thing at the moment. The line-up has got the following names: Paul Elstak, The Darkraver, Ruthless, The Viper, Deepack, Kasparov, Rob & MC Joe,Mystery, Nowaxx, and it’s hosted by MC Ruffian. That’s an impressive line-up, and one name on the list that I haven’t mentioned has made a promo mix, to get everyone happy for this awesome event: Genius.

And I know nothing about this DJ. Absolutely nothing. I’m new to the Freestyle world. I know the artists who have been in the game since the early 90s and early 00s, and it could have been that Genius played for many years, but he slipped underneath the radar. Thankfully I found this mix, and now I’m going to indulge myself into this wonderful mix. Yes, it’s looking good, if you should judge the tracklist added to the mix.

I will look into this DJ and will know more about him by the time I’ve finished this review. But here’s the tracklist first.

This is an excellent mix to listen to on a boring Saturday night. Unless you are going on: this could be an excellent mix to listen to when you are on your way to a party. Whatever you do, stay safe. You don’t want to injure yourself and not being able to go to Pussy Lounge’s excellent party.

The music is just good. I’m really digging this new style, which is basically the following combined: Hardstyle, Jumpstyle and Hardcore. Play whatever you like, whenever you like, and do it as hard as you can.

I’ve got nothing bad to mention about this mix. Maybe only track I don’t like, and that’s because it’s got the dreadful and horrible lyrics from ‘Wonderwall’ in it. Boring lyrics. But besides that, Genius has done an excellent job in making a very interesting and very entertaining mix.

Sadly I can’t go to Pussy Lounge – Freestyle Wintergames. But what’s keeping you? Nothing should stop you, in all fairness! Let this mix be your guide, and let Genius get your excitement level up to the max.

Oh yeah, I’ve learned something about Genius: he’s a man. Now, aren’t I a genius?
