Endymion @ back2school 2014

Van Martin van Zeelandt

It’s Sunday morning, and the majority of people are waking up with a banging headache (after a heavy night drinking and raving) or are still in bed in such a state, they will only wake up on Monday morning, when they need to get back to work or school. I’m wide awake, and already tearing the roof off. Blasting Hardcore music through my speakers so loud, I do wake up everyone in the street, even the dead. But would you not do the same, when you’ve had a good night sleep, no alcohol, no rave, nothing (which in itself is pathetic)?

The set I noticed on Soundcloud was a set recorded nearly 3 years ago, a set by Endymion. It was recorded at back2school on the 24th of December 2014 at the Maassilo in Rotterdam, and the line-up was a beauty: Rob & MC Joe, Neophyte, Darkraver, Zany, Panic, Deepack, Stanton, Luna, Ruffneck, The Viper, Vince, and many more. One of the sets was recorded and put on Soundcloud, and one contributor of many tracklists (hansolo) has kindly added one 2 years ago. So I’ve got everything to review this set.

Endymion is a well-established name, so it doesn’t need an introduction. If you do need more information, you should ask yourself if you are truly Hardcore or not, because everyone, and I do mean everyone knows Endymion.

Just did the washing up inbetween, and it has made the actual washing up quicker. How does Hardcore have an effect on us like that? It gives us unlimited powers and strengths we never thought we had. Bloody easy washing up though.

The set was filled with classic anthems from not only Endymion, but also Neophyte, Ophidian, Art Of Fighters, The Viper and more. You can look at the tracklist yourself, so there’s no need for me to explain which tracks are in here. But what I can share with you all is my three favourite records in this mix: ‘When Angels Cry’, ‘A New Today’ and ‘Act Of God’. Why, you might ask? Well, just listen to them, and you will know immediately why.

There’s no doubt Endymion are pioneers, and even to this day they are pioneers. But listening to this ‘old’ set with some of their earlier work proves that they weren’t just pioneers, but groundbreaking artists too. That’s why I like sets like this one, it takes us back to the roots of an artist or a style, and it shows us how much it has changed, but also how much of an impact the artists had in developping the style into its current form.

Endymion’s set is big. Small mixing errors, but manageble. Nothing bad though. So it’s get the score it deserves!
