Thumpa @ Happ’e Daze Sunderland 27.01.18

Van Martin van Zeelandt

German Trance. That’s something I don’t hear very often. It’s been at least a decade since I last heard proper German Trance. Truth be told, it’s not my favourite kind of Trance. I can listen to it, but wouldn’t go absolutely insane on a night out. It’s managable. But after I found this mix a couple of days ago, I thought I would give this kind of Trance a go.

It’s mixed by the mighty Thumpa. He keeps on experimenting with new sounds, from Gabber to Terror to German Trance. He’s becoming more diverse, and hence why they asked him to play at Happ’e Daze in Sunderland last month. He played there alongside DJ Smurf and Kutski.

I still find it amazing to hear German Trance after so many years. And I find it amazing that you can hear a specific sound that emerged out of this: Trancecore. Can you hear it too? A bit faster and slightly rougher, and you’ve got Trancecore.

Anyway, let me show you the tracklist to Thumpa’s set. An hour and a half long, with 23 tracks.

Wow. Not one name is known by me. This is a really unknown tracklist to me, 23 unknown names. That has never happened before. I thought I knew a bit, but it turns out I was completely wrong.

Not only did Thumpa play German Trance, but also Eurotrance and Makina, and Hardcore (but I think it was Happy Hardcore). A diverse tracklist. And it’s quite funny to hear that Trancecore was influenced by this, and you can hear the Hard House scene taking bits from this Eurotrance sound. It all makes sense to me.

It was a nice set by Thumpa. Not really my favourite kind of music, but still enjoyable. It’s nice to see Thumpa enjoying himself, playing whatever he wants to play (in accordance to the organisation of course, who booked him). This set takes me back to the early days of Trance music, when it was a tad cheesy and a lot happier than it is nowadays. But don’t forget, the technology has changed, and so has the music.

A good set. Not my favourite Thumpa set (or style), but still good.
