I don’t know what’s happening to me, but I’m going back in time slowely. Most of the people around me go forward, not me. I’m reminiscing to the good ol’ days of music, so I’m going backwards. Not that bloody far backwards, maybe as far as 1986. But no further, I’m not that bloody old. I’m thinking back to the good old days, when I started to experiment with the music around me, and started to become much more open minded when it comes to music. When I was a young lad, I was into House and that slowely moved towards Techno, from Techno to Gabber, from Gabber to Hardstyle, Hardstyle to Trance, and my universe expanded rapidly. My actual wallet size decreased and my income went all on buying records.
So my latest mission is to find proper mixes, and boy, have I found one for you: a liveset by Bryan Kearney, a legend. Recorded back in Glasgow in 2014, playing at Rectify, playing music from when I was a wee lad, and started going out nearly every week. The music from around the beginning of the noughties, and his set contains so many wicked anthems, I still can’t believe they are so old. Maybe I was notified to this mix because I played a Mauro Picotto set a couple of days ago, and Bryan played a shitload of his records. But also a few classics I’ve completely forgotten about!
He played at this event, and you can hear the people going absolutely ape. In a good way. But maybe they should have lowered the microphone level: during some bits of the recording the crowd sings louder than the record lol. Is that what you get when you go out in Glasgow? Never been there, but I’m intrigued now.
The tracklist is a thing of beauty. Porn some might say. I say it too! Porn.

How sexy is this tracklist? If I wouldn’t have known that Bryan Kearney did this mix, this could have easily been a mix done by Mauro Picotto. What an absolutely amazing tracklist, so many great anthems, and sadly it’s been a while since I heard these playing out loud. Bryan has picked the best of the best records, and I don’t know if another tracklist could be this good?
Mauro Picotto, what a superstar. The amount of his records in this mix is beyond belief. But he made so many great anthems. One of my favourite records is actually in this mix, ‘Verdi’. And also ‘Back To Cali’. But it’s not Mauro’s record who is the best (well, in this mix), it’s ‘On The Move’. When the original was released, I bought the single (don’t have it anymore) and I played it until I got so fed up by it, and hid it for a week… and started listening to it again. So catchy, this is definately in your head for the next few hours.
The set is really good. Loved it from the start to the end. Only got to give Bryan credit for composing such an amazing set. Yes, there are a few minor things here and there, and the crowd are maybe a bit too enthusiastic, but it’s still extremely enjoyable.
These tunes got me into Tech Trance/Trance, and they still rock my world to this day. Thanks Bryan, for reminding me of the good ol’ days, and how music has changed. I do like the music scene as it is now, but f**k me, I want a time machine and go back to the early noughties. Much better music.
