I don’t need to explain to you all who Goldie is. The man with the golden teeth and the biggest smile you have ever seen, doesn’t need to be introduced. A true legend, a pioneer for the Drum and Bass scene for many years. What this man has achieved in all those years is remarkable. Having his own label, multiple album, many books, an O.B.E… a much loved carreer that many wished they had. He has had it all, and still wants to showcase the world that he dominates the DnB scene. But for once we are not looking forward, but backwards. Back to the year 1996. That was the year in which many things happened, but the main thing that shaped DnB was the first time the world heard Goldie’s Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1. And what a mix that turned out to be.
I wasn’t around in 1996 (meaning in the UK, I was already walking the earth since 1983) but the significance of music was slowely growing on me: I started with House and Techno music, and in 1996 I was a full on Hardcore fan (even at the age of 13). DnB wouldn’t appear on my timeline for many years later, when I stumbled across it by accident. It was actually at Innercity, a large event, which took place during the early noughties, when they had a room filled with UKG artists, and it made me wonder the musical world a bit more, and found out multiple styles, and one of them was DnB.
This Essential Mix has been in my possession for many years, don’t know when I first discovered it. I reckon it was after I bought Goldie’s ‘Timeless’ album (a true masterpiece), and I wanted to hear some more music by Goldie. From the first moment I heard this mix I knew it was good. I remember always listening to this to mellow me down. Especially when I was playing ‘Need For Speed’. Never had an urge to listen to the stupid songs or the car tyres making a bloody racket, I wanted music. And Goldie’s mix was picture perfect.
It was so damn good, that I wanted to hear it again, here, in the year 2018. Remember, this mix is 22 years old! And it’s still a much loved mix on Soundcloud, nearly touching 50k plays, and it deserves it. Goldie was on fire, hand picked the records, and made a very fine mix. Like wine, this mix has aged very well.
What do you get? A mix filled with emotions. A mix with true meaning. Deeper than you have ever heard before. A level of euphoria that only lasts for a second (because the music can quickly change into this dark and edgy records, which drains the life out of you). Goldie’s music is always filled with emotions, and this mix is no exception.

Goldie takes you on a journey you’ve never been on before. He’s taking you to Narnia (wherever that might be), or any other mythical place you’ve always wanted to visit. This mix is so good: the flow of it, the beats, the basses, everything just jumps at you, but not in a shouty way. This is a good mix to listen to if you want to switch yourself from the world. Not thinking about the hassle of paying bills, picking up the kids (don’t forget to pick them up, otherwise it’s neglect, which isn’t good either), going to work, doing the wash, doing the washing up… every day life can fly by for an hour and 34 minutes.
He was already a big name, but not as big as he is nowadays. He’s a force to be reckoned with. Everyone knows Goldie, and he doesn’t take a ‘no’ for an answer. He pushes himself to the next level, and seeks the limits, and if he has found them, crushes them and creates new limits. He keeps on inventing himself over and over again, and how many artists can actually say they’ve found their inner self over and over again?
The music he releases nowadays is slightly different from what was released around 1995-1996. Many prefer the new age of musical programmes, helping you to perfect whatever sound you want to achieve, but these records were made with the most basic equipment. And even this mix was made with basic material (compared to what we have nowadays). But he mastered it. He made this mix another timeless masterpiece. I can only give Goldie credits for this mix.
He knows how to build up a mix properly, knows when to give the crowd time to breathe, and when to surprise them with music. He’s not just a pioneer, but also a magician. And one that keeps inventing new mystery tricks which we can’t understand, even if we try.
This mix only contains the best records you will ever hear. And I can’t pick one favourite. For this mix I go all out, and say the following sentence: ALL 28 RECORDS ARE TRULY AMAZING! And that’s something I’ve never said before. But after hearing this mix for the 4673th time, I know it’s true.
This should be on the ‘top 100 list’ of mixes you definately need to listen to before you pass away. You will appreciate what DnB actually is, and what it means to so many. And you will appreciate the skills this genius carries with him forever and ever. Goldie, the mighty magician. That’s what I’m calling him from now on.
