Goldie: Essential Mix 1996

Goldie Essentail Mix 1996

I don’t need to explain to you all who Goldie is. The man with the golden teeth and the biggest smile you have ever seen, doesn’t need to be introduced. A true legend, a pioneer for the Drum and Bass scene for many years. What this man has achieved in all those years is remarkable. Having his own label, multiple album, many books, an O.B.E… a much loved carreer that many wished they had. He has had it all, and still wants to showcase the world that he dominates the DnB scene. But for once we are not looking forward, but backwards. Back to the year 1996. That was the year in which many things happened, but the main thing that shaped DnB was the first time the world heard Goldie’s Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1. And what a mix that turned out to be.

I wasn’t around in 1996 (meaning in the UK, I was already walking the earth since 1983) but the significance of music was slowely growing on me: I started with House and Techno music, and in 1996 I was a full on Hardcore fan (even at the age of 13). DnB wouldn’t appear on my timeline for many years later, when I stumbled across it by accident. It was actually at Innercity, a large event, which took place during the early noughties, when they had a room filled with UKG artists, and it made me wonder the musical world a bit more, and found out multiple styles, and one of them was DnB.

This Essential Mix has been in my possession for many years, don’t know when I first discovered it. I reckon it was after I bought Goldie’s ‘Timeless’ album (a true masterpiece), and I wanted to hear some more music by Goldie. From the first moment I heard this mix I knew it was good. I remember always listening to this to mellow me down. Especially when I was playing ‘Need For Speed’. Never had an urge to listen to the stupid songs or the car tyres making a bloody racket, I wanted music. And Goldie’s mix was picture perfect.

It was so damn good, that I wanted to hear it again, here, in the year 2018. Remember, this mix is 22 years old! And it’s still a much loved mix on Soundcloud, nearly touching 50k plays, and it deserves it. Goldie was on fire, hand picked the records, and made a very fine mix. Like wine, this mix has aged very well.

What do you get? A mix filled with emotions. A mix with true meaning. Deeper than you have ever heard before. A level of euphoria that only lasts for a second (because the music can quickly change into this dark and edgy records, which drains the life out of you). Goldie’s music is always filled with emotions, and this mix is no exception.

Let me show you the tracklist (if you are one of those people who have never heard this mix before).

Goldie takes you on a journey you’ve never been on before. He’s taking you to Narnia (wherever that might be), or any other mythical place you’ve always wanted to visit. This mix is so good: the flow of it, the beats, the basses, everything just jumps at you, but not in a shouty way. This is a good mix to listen to if you want to switch yourself from the world. Not thinking about the hassle of paying bills, picking up the kids (don’t forget to pick them up, otherwise it’s neglect, which isn’t good either), going to work, doing the wash, doing the washing up… every day life can fly by for an hour and 34 minutes.

He was already a big name, but not as big as he is nowadays. He’s a force to be reckoned with. Everyone knows Goldie, and he doesn’t take a ‘no’ for an answer. He pushes himself to the next level, and seeks the limits, and if he has found them, crushes them and creates new limits. He keeps on inventing himself over and over again, and how many artists can actually say they’ve found their inner self over and over again?

The music he releases nowadays is slightly different from what was released around 1995-1996. Many prefer the new age of musical programmes, helping you to perfect whatever sound you want to achieve, but these records were made with the most basic equipment. And even this mix was made with basic material (compared to what we have nowadays). But he mastered it. He made this mix another timeless masterpiece. I can only give Goldie credits for this mix.

He knows how to build up a mix properly, knows when to give the crowd time to breathe, and when to surprise them with music. He’s not just a pioneer, but also a magician. And one that keeps inventing new mystery tricks which we can’t understand, even if we try.

This mix only contains the best records you will ever hear. And I can’t pick one favourite. For this mix I go all out, and say the following sentence: ALL 28 RECORDS ARE TRULY AMAZING! And that’s something I’ve never said before. But after hearing this mix for the 4673th time, I know it’s true.

This should be on the ‘top 100 list’ of mixes you definately need to listen to before you pass away. You will appreciate what DnB actually is, and what it means to so many. And you will appreciate the skills this genius carries with him forever and ever. Goldie, the mighty magician. That’s what I’m calling him from now on.

Nina Kraviz – Essential Mix 2017-10-07

When you see the name Nina Kraviz on Soundcloud, you know something good has been posted. And that happened today. A Nina Kraviz’s Essential Mix, which was aired on the 7th of October. It was shared on Soundcloud by the Queen of Techno herself. And that makes it more special. I sadly don’t have the chance to listen to BBC Radio 1 every so often, so I do miss out on a lot, but thankfully this was uploaded 2 months ago, and already played thousands of times. Well, wouldn’t you give this mix a go, or give it a miss? I reckon you would do the most sensible thing, and play it. And of course turn the bloody volume right up!

Due to social media the name became familiar. I have never seen her perform live, but those video’s on Youtube and Facebook are proof that she’s the leading lady in the Techno scene. She’s a Siberian DJ, and she has become a household name all over the world. I’ve seen video’s of her completely loosing it behind the decks, and I loved her enthusiasm and passion for Techno music. Hence the reason why BBC Radio 1 asked her to make an Essential Mix. She knows how to capture the moment, and send the audience into a different dimension. Like I experienced earlier today, I went into a mine field of emotions, all thanks to this mix.

Let me show you the tracklist. It’s an 2 hour long mix, so expect 2 hours of madness!

I loved this mix so much, I had it on repeat for the whole of my work day. I loved its darkness, it being edgy and yet still extremely groovy. And what I also liked was the tracklist. Just glance at it, and you will notice that the majority of titles are so weird and quirky, just the way I like it. Don’t know where she found these weird title records, but they are worth your time! This is one seriously impressive mix.

Essential Mix, basically an institution for music lovers. There have been many amazing mixes over the years, and the one which always stood on top, was Goldie’s mix. Well, both of his sets. But Nina’s mix has gone straight to number one for me personally. She has made this mix so edgy, I don’t know how to express myself. She’s got the gift of making Techno sound extremely sexy, and she’s made a mix so good, you won’t believe it’s over and it took over 2 hours of your life. This mix will be controlling you the second you press play.

I can’t pick a favourite. I simply can not, and will not do it. Because the 38 records she picked are ALL truly amazing. I am gobsmacked by the sheer quality of the mix. A true contender of ‘the best mix of all time’. So good, I really need to see her play live somewhere on this planet. If she plays live as good as this mix, I will become a fan for life. But this mix already made me aware of her skills, and they are amazing.

Check this one out right now!

T-Phonic & Deadman – BBC Radio 1 – Technique DNB60 (Friction Show) (2017)

3 days ago a set was uploaded onto Soundcloud, and it’s a big one! If you are digging Drum & Bass, look no further, DNB60 can now be found online! A mix by T-Phonic and Deadman, two of DnB latest superstars! Signed by Technique Recordings, they already have proven themselves to the world, and they are on the rise! Emerging into the scene not that long ago as a duo, they already have gathered a following, including yours truly, TCD.

I was notified by these new superstars via Al Storm, who’s one half of the duo. He’s known as Al Storm in the UK Hardcore scene, but in the DnB scene he’s known as Deadman. To me he’s already a superstar, but now he has risen into the wonderful world of Drum and Bass alongside T-Phonic, and to showcase what they are capable of, they’ve made a mix for DNB60, which was aired on BBC 1 a couple of weeks ago. I sadly couldn’t listen to it, so I hoped I would find it on Soundcloud. And 3 days ago I was so happy to find it there.

One thing you need to know before you press play, this is not your standard ‘one in a million’ mix. This is an outstanding mix. Why, you might ask? Well, it’s only an hour long, and you can hear 54, yes 54 records being played! How amazing is that? It’s a megamix with so many awesome records, it will blow your mind away!

The mix is extremely tight, and it’s worthy to be played on BBC Radio 1. They wouldn’t play a standard mix, or a boring mix, but only the best of the best, and T-Phonic and Deadman have delivered an awesome mix they should be proud of. The tracks are really good, carefully selected and carefully mixed, and the result is a mix you need to have. You seriously need to have this mix, if you are a Drum and Bass fan!

T-Phonic and Deadman are the future. They are on the rise, and with this mix they show how dangerous they are, and skilled at the same time.

What’s my favourite record? Erm… it has to be the last one by Commix, ‘Be True’. Big tune, sadly played too shortly, but you can still appreciate it being in this mix. It counts for every track in this mix, they are played too damn short, but if they would play it to the max, the mix would last for 23 hours. And that’s too much. This is a nice and compact mix, good to listen to when you are driving, running your daily marathon, cooking, or doing anything you do with pleasure!

Download it now, and follow T-Phonic and Deadman on social media. Join the hype train, and worship them!

ETC!ETC!- Uncut Quest Mix For BBC Radio 1 (Annie Nightingale) (2015)

ETC!ETC!- Uncut Quest Mix For BBC Radio 1

The other day I made a decision, a radical one: I would give this unknown style called ‘Trap’ a go. On Soundcloud you can listen to many styles and genres, and the most popular ones will appear in a list, and on this list a mix by ETC!ETC! appeared. Now, before we continue, I don’t know anything about Trap, Moombahton or ETC!ETC! so this is all new to me. I had to look up what Trap/Moombahton is. According to Wikipedia, Trap is a subgenre, with its main genre being HipHop. This music style is typically filled with 808 Bass, Hi hats and synthesizers. So what is Moombahton? It’s a subgenre of Reggaeton and House, and basically it’s Electro House played at the Reggaeton speed, which is 105 to 115 BPM. Enough music info, what about ETC!ETC!?

Not much info on his Facebook page. Only that he’s an L.A. based DJ, producer, motivational speaker, coffee addict and cookie enthusiast. That’s all we need to know, eh? But to be honest, who isn’t a coffee addict and cookie enthusiast? Everyone is. So what about his music? On his page he mentions ‘fuck genres’ underneath the genre section. So he plays whatever he likes. And 154k+ people seem to like it. Could I be the next fan of ETC!ETC!? It all depends on his mix, a mix he did for Annie Nightingale’s show on BBC Radio 1.

Tracklist is something necessary, I would say.

This is a nice introduction to a style I’ve never heard of before. I do know it excists, but what it is, and what it sounds like was unknown to me, until now. After hearing this massive mix by ETC!ETC! I’m hooked. I am addicted!

It’s a wonderful mix, bouncy from start to finish. There’s no dull moment during this mix, ETC!ETC! does the it extremely well, and the result is an astonishing mix. I’m pleased to have found this mix, and now I’m about to share the noise with the whole neighbourhood! Loving the vibes, loving the atmosphere it generates. Powerful tunes, carefully selected and mixed.

Best track in this mix? Oh, not easy to pick one. But the one that made me want to bounce the hardest, has got to be ‘Swoop Coring’. My God, the strength behind this track is immense! Dark, edgy, this track has got everything you need. It sets the tone for the rest of the mix. So if you aren’t ready, make sure you stop listening now, because you will not be able to handle so much filth!

The mix is astonishing. After playing it once, I had to press play again, and again. Even though I never heard of ETC!ETC! before, the mix is one that will stay in your head for days! Solid tracks, perfectly mixed, everything is perfect about this mix. And seeing as this is my introduction to Moombahton and Trap, it’s a good mix to start my journey into this unknown territory. Thanks ETC!ETC! for a wicked mix!

Only one score!
